The Textbook Way

For Your Cabinets

We always aim to do things the “textbook” way. (Hence our name!) It is important to make sure the proper process is followed or the paint won’t last. It is easy to make cabinets look good at first, the real key is making sure to do it the right way so the painted cabinets in your Cleveland, OH home look great in 5 or 10 years!

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Prep Work

The first step is to remove doors and drawer fronts as well as all hardware. We then protect all of the surfaces in the kitchen such as the countertops, floors, and appliances. We also set up the kitchen for spray painting by putting up plastic walls, bringing in mobile ventilation, and masking off all of the cabinet openings. The surfaces require thorough cleaning with a degreaser. Then the existing coating will need a light sanding to remove any gloss or varnish. Paint will not stick to a slick or shiny surface. We have invested thousands of dollars in dustless sanding equipment to give the absolute best result.

Priming the Cabinets for Paint

After wiping down the cabinets and doors, we are ready to prime. We will use a primer that is specifically designed for cabinets. On oak cabinets, we add an additional coat of primer that is applied with special rollers to work the primer into the wood grain. While we can not fill all of the wood grain on oak cabinets, this step is necessary to give the best results.

Finally, we apply two coats of a top-quality product called 2k Polyurethane. We purchase this product, which is imported from Italy because it is the gold standard for fine wood and cabinet finishing and works well with our climate here near Cleveland, Ohio. It is the standard in Europe where environmental standards are more stringent than in the USA and we want to use the best product in your home that we can.

All cabinet doors and drawer fronts are brought back to our shop in Lakewood to be sprayed with a special sprayer so they get a smooth, durable finish just like you would expect with brand-new cabinets. The actual cabinets are painted on-site in your kitchen either with brushes and roller or with a sprayer depending on your preferences.

Best of all, our premium cabinet painting services are backed with our Lifetime Touch-up promise to make sure they look beautiful for years and years to come! (For as long as you own your Cleveland-area home.)

Local Factors That May Affect Cleveland Area Kitchen Cabinet Painting Projects & Costs

If kitchen cabinet painting is part of a larger kitchen renovation be sure to check with state building ordinances for Ohio and local building ordinances for Cleveland, Avon Lake, Lakewood or whatever city your home is in to ensure the work will comply with local building codes and to confirm is building permit is required. For example, per Avon Lake city building codes a city building permit is required for any project involving plumbing, gaslines, or renovations generally, including kitchens.

We all love our summers on Lake Erie but we also know that with our proximity to the lake those summer months comes with sometimes unbearable humidity. Per weatherspark.com “Avon Lake experiences significant seasonal variation in the perceived humidity. The muggier period of the year lasts for 3.6 months, from June 2 to September 20, during which time the comfort level is muggy, oppressive, or miserable at least 10% of the time. The month with the most muggy days in Avon Lake is July, with 11.7 days that are muggy or worse.”

A humidity level of 70 percent is typically the highest acceptable level for most paints. If the humidity rises to 80 to 85 percent, the paint won’t properly dry or cure. Luckily for us, and you if you choose the Textbook way, all cabinet doors and drawer fronts are brought back to our climate controlled shop where we keep humidity levels in a perfect range for curing and drying.

Of course, the above factors may affect the timing or cost of your Cleveland area kitchen cabinet painting project, or kitchen renovation generally but kitchen renovations often increase the value of your home. Per Redfin the median price of a single family home sale  in Cleveland was up this past month 28.9% year over year (YOY)! Nearby in Lakewood, year over year gains were more modest but the median sale price of single family Lakewood homes was more than two times that of Cleveland. That Kitchen upgrade will likely be well worth it.
