Painting an older home comes with some unique challenges. Often times, the height of the home is a challenge, but if that doesn’t make it stressful enough, the amount of prep work required can be daunting.
We paint a lot of homes in older communities around Cleveland, like Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and Ohio City. The most common concern with home owners in these areas is how smooth we can get the wood siding to look after prepping and painting. Our professional house painters do a great job of removing loose paint, but because EPA Lead laws prohibit sanding, the siding can often have a slightly ‘bumpy’ appearance.
Sherwin Williams came out with a primer called PrimeRx to compete with XIM’s PeelBond about two years ago. In 2016, Sherwin Williams took it a step further with a new product called Rejuvenate. Rejuvenate is a paint and primer in one, but the primer is PrimeRx. This is a ‘high-build’ paint and primer that is applied very thick. As it dries, it helps to level the surface to give a more uniform, smoother appearance. While the surface will not be completely smooth, it does make a big difference.
Here are a few key details to know about Sherwin-Williams Rejuvenate:
- Originally, it was only available in light colors but Sherwin Williams can now tint to darker colors as well.
- It only comes in one sheen called “low sheen”. This is somewhere between a “Flat” and a “Satin” sheen.
- Fast drying and stays flexible
- Can be used on textured or smooth surfaces such as wood, plywood, concrete, cement, stucco, aluminum, and vinyl.

In my opinion, Sherwin Williams Rejuvenate is not the best option for most people. We would absolutely still recommend a separate coat of primer and then a separate top coat. Where Rejuvenate does stand out is for rental properties. If a rental property owner needs to make the exterior look great at a slightly reduced cost point, Rejuvenate may be the best option as it can save some labor time.
